Well it’s that time of year we hurtle towards the Group’s main event in programme – the Annual Exhibition of members artwork. Posters all printed and distributed and banners up.

This year new banners have been necessary due to the church requiring change of format of their details. Thanks to Liz D’arville for taking time and effort sorting this. The new design with Group’s logo certainly stands out. Oh and thank you for hot footing to Sainsbury’s car park area to nab the remaining space on railings!

Finding areas for banners is becoming tricky. For any Suffolk County Council owned railings one must have a licence/insurance which of course requires the inevitable paper chain. So thank you to Graham Ellis and Chris Robinson for agreeing to display a banner on their respective fence.

142 Gallery, Hamilton Road

Level Two – will be at gallery from Thursday 6th until Wednesday 12th August.

Opening times 10.00am – 4.00pm each day except Wednesday 10.00am – 1.00pm

This is an ideal opportunity to view their youth project which is a special exhibition showcasing artwork created by talented young people from Felixstowe.

Jim Lait will be exhibiting work during the month of September so do go and take a look at some point

Art on the Prom

As many of you know, this much looked forward to event has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship, and certainly was not for the lack of trying. With new leads of possibilities it is hopeful it will return next year.

Although not heard anything official, I hope the usual Guide Dog art and craft fair will still be at the Leisure Centre on Sunday 6th September.

Jumping back to July ….

As many of you know from Gillian’s email cascaded recently, Group President Teresa Seals pastel class is holding their annual art exhibition for charity at the Quay Church, Quay Street, Woodbridge on Saturday 25th July. Adding this info thought you might like to know/remind that the number 73 bus will take you there if you don’t have transport. After much campaigning by Felixstowe Travel Watch it is an hourly service rather two hourly.

Teresa is thrilled that four of her artworks have made it through to the SAA final with a public vote for People’s Choice category. Do take a look on SAA website.

Also following recent letter from SAA kindly forwarded to Group members by Gillian, I telephoned SAA to clarify if discount was for new SAA membership only. Yes it is and discount is for one year’s membership only. So maybe you would like to try for one year and see from there whether to continue membership. Page 1 of 2

Tuesday 28th July 7.30pm: –Work evening for members only.

Clothed model available to have a go at life drawing or bring other items if you prefer, ie Still Life. This follows a request by several members at recent AGM for such an evening.

Tuesday 8th September 7.30pm: – Carole Massey will be demonstrating ‘Portrait in pen and ink’

During the evening the winner of Annual Exhibition People’s Favourite Painting will be announced and presented with Perpetual Trophy plus a prize, plus runner up presented with a prize.

Group President’s Challenge will also be announced and entry details.

Tuesday 22nd September 7.30pm – Untutored work evening for members. Life drawing with female model Rosie.

Thank you Rosie for stepping in to model on 14th July when Lisa’s work commitments changed which meant she could not attend.

Friday Social Painting afternoons at Memorial Hall, Trimley St Martin 1.30-4.00pm

£2 per afternoon inclusive of refreshments

Certainly continues to prove a popular afternoon, and the recently installed air conditioning units were most welcome !

For those new to Felixstowe Art Group, members work on their own projects with help on hand from other members if needed.

Oh and remember, as email from Gillian, Group are meeting in Rosemary Room Friday 31st July. This is due to a childrens’ music event for 4 days. With affordable venues with stage facilities is like finding hens teeth, hirers such as ourselves asked to use Rosemary Room. Be assured such requests are not a common practice.

With the recent weather feeling rather tropical a snippet of trivia on a tropical fruit The Pineapple.

Despite its name, the pineapple is neither a pine cone nor an apple. In fact it is a berry – specifically a mass of berries that have fused together. They were first cultivated by South American native tribes, particularly Paraguay and Southern Brazil before European explorers encountered them. The name derived due to this strange new fruit looking like a pine cone hence the name pine apple! Christopher Columbus is credited with bringing the first pineapples to Europe in the 15th century and …. wait for it …. the world’s largest pineapple weighed in at 8.28kg. It was recorded in 2011 and was grown by Australian woman Christine McCallum!!
